Radical innovation with additive manufacturing

Facilitation of Innovation within Space Manufacturing

Participants: LTU Divison of Product Innovation and GKN Aerospace Engine Systems

By applying additive manufacturing when making space components, it is possible to combine optimal design with the most suitable material. One problem is that this new manufacturing method poses a challenge to old ways of thinking in terms of product development and innovation. The AM methods must be validated in order to reach a higher “technology readiness level”, which indicates the maturity of the method in respect to manufacturing flying components.

This subproject is intended to build new knowledge within the field together with the space innovation network that exists in Sweden, including manufacturers, subsuppliers, universities and end users.

PhD student 1: “Design and qualification of additive manufacturing of space components”

PhD student 2: “Radical innovation within space applications – with additive manufacturing as an example”
